…is a modern Japanese form of self defense based on the principle of non-violent resolution of conflict. In Aikido, any incoming force or “attack” is redirected into pins, safe holds or falls via circular motions, using the energy and momentum of the opponent instead of going against it. Through efficient blending movements, aggression gets neutralized. The defender learns to remain calm and centered under pressure while protecting her- or himself using a variety of techniques, without answering and perpetuating violence with more violence. Aikido, being a very effective and empowering martial art, trains more than just the body, though. If practiced consistently over a period of time, it helps to strengthen the spirit, build confidence and enhance conflict resolution skills in all areas of life, as well as toning the muscular system and increasing coordination, awareness and balance. It is, however, not for the fainthearted or the person, who gives up easily. As it requires considerable skill to defend oneself WITHOUT seriously injuring the opponent, it generally takes longer to achieve basic proficiency in Aikido, than in other martial arts. Therefore it requires a substantial amount of commitment to stay with it and allow the process to take place in its own time. Conceived in the mid` 20th century by “O`Sensei, Morihei Ueshiba”, Aikido and its study has quickly gained momentum, and is now practiced all around the globe by people looking for alternate ways of resolving conflict than the “Eye for an Eye” approach. It is, at its heart, a way of self improvement and personal growth. On top of that, the practice of Aikido is incredibly fun, and a great way to get in shape, while learning good and useful skills for everyday life. An ongoing class as well as periodic beginning courses, are offered at the Moab Fitness Center. We train in a spirit of mutual support and respect. Since Aikido is based on utilizing inner, rather than physical strength, it is suitable for people of all ages, body types and walks of life.
